Imposition of sanctions political attitude toward Iran's goodwill

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, June 10, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast on Thursday cited the imposition of new sanctions on Iran as West's political attitude toward Tehran’s goodwill.

Talking to IRNA, the spokesman said the western countries cheated the international community.

Referring to the imposition of new sanctions on Iran, the spokesman asserted that such moves never prevent the Iranian nation from pursuing its peaceful nuclear program.

Mehman-Parast underlined that the best way to respect rights of all nations is to avoid discriminatory attitudes and removing the existing injustice on the international scene.

He also appreciated stands taken by Turkey, Brazil and Lebanon regarding the UN Security Council’s anti-Iran resolution.

Mehman-Parast said the approach of the three countries is an indication of new developments in the international arena.

“Independent and important countries such as Iran, Turkey, Brazil and several other states have paved the way for establishment of new atmosphere in the world,” he said.

He called on all independent states to support and welcome the new development so that world nations would witness welfare.

The Security Council imposed a fourth round of sanctions against Iran on Wednesday.

The resolution passed with “no” votes from Turkey and Brazil, which argued that sanctions were the wrong approach to take on Tehran, and an abstention from Lebanon.

By giving no votes to the new Security Council’s resolution, Turkey and Brazil reiterated that a nuclear fuel swap deal they inked with Iran last month created the opportunity for further diplomacy.

By inking the deal, they revived parts of a plan brokered by UN nuclear inspectors in October for Tehran to part with 1,200 kg of low enriched uranium in return for fuel rods for the Tehran research reactor.

EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton’s office said last night that the resolution keeps the door open for continued engagement between world powers and Iran.

“Sanctions are not the endgame or the final solution,” the EU statement said. “We hope that today’s decision will bring Iran to the negotiating table.”
