Iranian president says rich nations drink too much water

RIA Novosti

15:44 09/06/2010 DUSHANBE, June 9 (RIA Novosti) - Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Wednesday accused developed countries of using too much water.

"One of the main causes of water shortages is that developed countries use two times more than is necessary," Ahmadinejad said at the Water for Life international conference in Tajikistan's capital of Dushanbe.

The Iranian leader also said excessive use of water by rich nations caused climate change and greenhouse gas emissions.

"Another problem in getting access to fresh water is occupation and the violation of human rights," he said, citing the destruction of agricultural lands in the Palestinian territories.

Ahmadinejad suggested developing an effective technology for seawater desalination.

"I also propose using alternative energy sources - nuclear, solar and wind - instead of hydrocarbon energy to improve the climate on the Earth in conditions of a global warming," he added.
