Clinton: U.S., China, Russia Agree Iran Sanctions Draft Resolution
May 18, 2010
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton says that the United States, Russia, and China have reached agreement on a "strong draft" UN resolution on sanctions against Iran.
Clinton told the U.S. Senate Foreign Relations Committee that the draft was the result of common work with Russia and China and would be passed to the UN Security Council members shortly.
"We have reached agreement on a strong draft with the cooperation of both Russia and China," Clinton said. "We plan to circulate that draft resolution to the entire Security Council today."
The announcement came in spite of a nuclear fuel-swap deal that commits Iran to shipping much of its low-enriched uranium to Turkey in exchange for nuclear fuel for a Tehran reactor.
Earlier today, Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu called on Western powers not to endanger the chances of the swap deal by threatening new sanctions against Iran.
Davutoglu was one of the signatories -- along with his Brazilian and Iranian counterparts -- of the agreement on Iran's shipping its uranium to Turkey.
