President: US creates obstacle on way of global disarmament

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, May 5, IRNA -- President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Wednesday that the US creates obstacle on the way of global disarmament.

“We believe that if the US government agrees to disarm, the other nuclear weapons states will follow suit,” President Ahmadinejad told reporters upon arrival in Tehran Mehrabad Airport after a three-day visit to New York to attend the NPT Review Conference.

President Ahmadinejad said certain nuclear weapons states explicitly and some others implicitly declared that their main problem is disarmament by the US government and if Americans agree to disarmament and scrap their nuclear arsenals, they too will voluntarily do the same under supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

“Many have pinned hopes on the conference and we too are hopeful that the conference will reach clear, fair and practical results,” he said.

He hoped that those, seeking supremacy through nuclear weapons and think nuclear arms will make them superior, would relinquish the satanic and selfish ideology and join other governments and nations.

If the proposals and recommendations, which are humanitarian and fair are agreed to by the US, the wave which has risen worldwide and the demands of nations and governments will force the US to bow to the international conventions.

Iran’s proposals to the NPT Review Conference in New York were fair, legal and within framework of the UN nuclear Agency’s goals, said Ahmadinejad, adding that nuclear arms are most problematic for their owners too.
