Iran to present important proposals to NPT confab: FM spokesman

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, May 2, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehman-Parast said on Sunday that Iran will present important proposals to the NPT review conference in New York.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad left Tehran for New York this morning to attend the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) review conference at the UN headquarters.

Talking to IRNA, he said the Islamic Republic of Iran will participate in the NPT meeting at the highest level to outline its viewpoints.

He added that during the meeting, grounds should be prepared for enforcement of three pillars of the NPT including ?disarmament’, ?non-proliferation’ and ?peaceful use of nuclear energy for all nations’.

Mehman-Parast reiterated that the world public opinion should be aware of the main danger threatening the international security, saying such a threat stems from expansionist policies of the countries possessing nuclear weapons. Those states believe that they can provide their security through development of their nuclear arsenals, he added.

He called on the participants in the NPT confab to underline international threats and the countries’ rights to acquire peaceful nuclear know-how.

President Ahmadinejad is to address the NPT review conference Monday at the UN headquarters on its opening day after the inaugural speech of UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.

Although the NPT review conference is to be held at the ministerial level, President Ahmadinejad decided to take part in the gathering due to its importance and in order to discuss Iran’s proposals for the treaty’s review in person.
