IAEA chief terms talks with Iran foreign minister 'constructive'

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Vienna, April 25, IRNA -- Director General of International Atomic Energy Agency Yukiya Amano on Sunday described his talks with the Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki on the fuel swap as ‘constructive and positive’.

Speaking to IRNA after his meeting with Mottaki, Amano said the two sides reviewed fuel swap and it is expected bilateral negotiations to go ahead.

Nuclear fuel for Tehran medical research center was among the agenda in their talks, he said.

Amanao said that the two parties made progress on the IAEA’s Safeguards Agreement for 20 percent uranium enrichment.

Iran has demanded the UN nuclear agency make arrangements for supply of 20 percent enriched fuel to Tehran medical research reactor.

The IAEA forwarded Iranian demand to the nuclear states and they offered to swap 3.5 percent enriched uranium with 20 percent fuel. Iran agreed to the proposal on condition that the swap to take place in Iranian territory.

Iran says that France has poor record in honoring its commitments to Iran over the national nuclear program to produce electricity citing violation of Iranian rights by the French company of Eurodif.

Eurodif has undertaken to supply Iran with enriched uranium to fuel Iranian reactor in 1970s, but, it has failed to honor its obligation though major part of the French company's shares belong to Iran.

The Iranian foreign minister told IRNA in Vienna that Iran will go ahead with diplomatic talks over the fuel swap.

Amano commended performance of Tehran International Conference on 'Disarmament and Non-Proliferation' with the motto of “Nuclear Energy For All and Nuclear Weapons For No One” in which high ranking officials and representatives from 60 countries took part in April.
