First stage of IRGC military drill conducted successfully: Commander

Tehran, April 22, IRNA -- An IRGC commander said on Thursday that the first stage of the ongoing military exercise in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz has been conducted successfully.
Spokesman for the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps, Brigadier General Ali-Reza Tangsiri told reporters that the objective of the first stage of the IRGC military drill was to destroy targets of the hypothetical enemy on the ground.
The maneuver dubbed the “Holy Prophet 5” coincides with the 31st anniversary of establishment of the IRGC.
The war game is to demonstrate the country's defensive capabilities and its determination to maintain security in the region.
New weapons will be displayed during the maneuver that will continue for the next three days.
The IRGC's naval, air and ground forces are taking part in the major drill that seeks to display Iran's deterrent military power to help establish security in the strategic region.
Brigadier General Tangsiri announced that a newly built vessel which was designed and constructed by the Iranian experts and engineers was used in the first stage of the military exercise.
He expressed hope that the region would witness a joint military exercise with participation of several regional countries.
In the meantime, the IRGC Navy will testfire a range of home-built missiles in the war game.
Various kinds of short range missiles will also be testfired in the four-stage exercises.
The IRGC deputy commander, Brigadier Hossein Salami said on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic of Iran acknowledges importance of security in the region and the Iranian undeniable role in this respect.
“Peace and friendship, security, tranquility and mutual trust are the message of this war game for neighboring countries in the Persian Gulf region,” he added.
