IAEO chief: Iran seeks objective, sufficient guarantee for fuel swap

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, April 21, IRNA -- Head of Iran’s Atomic Energy Organization Ali Akbar Salehi said on Wednesday that the Islamic Republic of Iran seeks objective guarantee for fuel swap.

He made the remark while talking to reporters after the cabinet meeting.

He said by tangible and sufficient guarantees he meant the exchange of fuel should be carried out simultaneously and inside Iranian territory.

Answering a question about Iran’s attitude towards doing the swap in a third country, he said that there are also other ways to do the job, the details of which will be announced later by Iranian foreign minister after his meeting with the members of the United Nations Security Council.

According to Salehi, Iran’s Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki is to hold separate meetings with every single member of the UN Security Council.

He said Mottaki also plans to hold talks with leaders of 10 countries about the fuel swap.

Salehi noted that Iran has already written a letter to the International Atomic Energy Agency demanding fuel from the countries which have the capacity to supply 20 pecent fuel for Tehran medical research reactor.

Asked to comment on the recent International Conference on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation in Tehran, he described the event a success and said it had very good achievements because it disclosed the unfair and unjust behavior of western countries in implementing the articles of the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

He said the conference proved that the countries possessing atomic weapons have neglected the issue of disarmament, the basic provision of the NPT.

The IAEO chief said at the same time Iran was making good progress in producing 20 percent fuel.
