Producing weapon with S-300 capability on Iran's agenda: Minister

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, April 21, IRNA -- Defense Minister Brigadier-General Ahmad Vahidi said Wednesday that producing weapon with S-300 capability has been put on the agenda of Iran’s weapons manufacturing sector.

He made the announcement while talking to after a cabinet session.

“Iran has no need to build S-300 missiles,” the minister told reporters who had asked if a newly-made domestic weapon has been an alternative to S-300 missiles.

“What has been produced and its news was publiticized was related to a medium-range system,” Vahidi said.

He added that the newly-made system was a complicated weapon which could fly up to 20 km high in the air in a range of 40 km.

Iran has announced on April 11 that it has inaugurated its first advanced medium-range air defense missile system.

The system called ‘Mersad’ (Ambush) and could hit any modern aircraft flying in low or medium altitudes.

Commenting on some reports by Western media that quoted US officials as saying that Iran was to build missiles which would reach the US territory, Vahidi said, “We have no such a program.”

The minister said such allegations were made as part of a “psychological warfare against Iran.”
