Strengthening NPT only way to disarmament, non-proliferation
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, April 17, IRNA -- Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Saeed Jalili called Saturday for strengthening of the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty as the only way to stop nuclear proliferation.
He made the call during his speech at the opening session of the 1st International Conference on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation which began here earlier in the day.
Officials and ministers from about 60 world countries as well as representatives and nuclear experts from international organization are present in the two-day conference.
Jalili stressed that preventing big powers from imposing their influence on the International Atomic Energy Agency would be considered as another factor leading to the nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation.
He suggested that in order to facilitate the process of nuclear disarmament, a specific timetable be set up for the elimination of all nuclear weapons worldwide and the “verification mechanism” be implemented on the activities of the nuclear-weapon-states.
Criticizing violation of the articles 1 and 2 of the NPT by some governments who provided nuclear arms to the Zionist regime, Jalili said a “fact-finding-committee” should be formed by the IAEA to introduce those countries that have helped nuclear arms proliferation.
The official also suggested that the nuclear-weapons-states to be banned from any nuclear cooperation with the NPT non-member states and also be obligated to not transfer any nuclear material, equipment, information and technology to those states.
Jalili stressed that any efforts of the internatioinal community towards nuclear disarmament should, firstly, be focused on the US and other states which own nuclear arms.
Jalili stated that nuclear disarmament is the major step to be taken towards a safe world.
