Salehi: NPT might lose its efficiency

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, April 17, IRNA -- Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi said on Saturday that if existing unjust policies and dual standards in dealing with nuclear energy continue, the NPT will lose its efficiency in near future.

He made the remarks in a speech to the two-day International Conference on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation underway in Tehran with participation of over 60 countries.

Regretfully, nuclear technology which can serve world nations has been turned into the biggest threat to the international community, he said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) was established to promote peaceful nuclear program around the globe but due to interference of certain western countries and weakening of the NPT’s letter of association, the body is now serving United Nations Security Council which pursues politically-motivated policies of few countries, he said.

Nuclear bombardment of Japanese cities left negative impacts on world public opinion, he said.

“If countries armed with nuclear weapons want to respect and bolster NPT, they should fully fulfill their pledges to this end,” he said.

There is no doubt that continuation of nuclear arms race and adoption of dual-standard policies in dealing with peaceful nuclear energy will create a challenge for the world, he said.

“If policies such as selective approaches, use of language of threat, unjust and dual standard polices are not halted at the earliest opportunities, NPT will lose its legitimacy and the IAEA will be deviated from its main principles, Salehi said.
