China Joins Iran Sanctions Talks in New York

VOA News 08 April 2010

China confirms it will join the United States and other world powers for talks on a possible new round of United Nations sanctions against Iran for its nuclear activities.

Leaders from the United States, China, Russia, Britain, France and Germany are to discuss the matter in New York on Thursday.

China has been reluctant to impose new punitive measures against Tehran.

A Foreign Ministry spokeswoman in Beijing confirmed Thursday that China will take part in the sanctions talks, but she added China still believes dialogue is the best way forward. Beijing's position is especially important because China has veto power as a permanent U.N. member.

U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice said Thursday the international group is working swiftly and hopes to take action on Iran within weeks. Rice declined to say how long the negotiations may take.

World powers believe Iran is secretly trying to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies.
