Iran's new letter on TRR fuel provision delivered to Amano published

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Vienna, Feb 23, IRNA -- Iran has presented a new letter to IAEA Secretary General Yukia Amano on provision of fuel for Tehran Research Reactor.

According to IRNA, the letter was published on Monday 22nd at IAEA official website for information of its member states and circulated among IAEA Board of Governors upon Iran’s request.

In a part of the letter written on February 18th to the IAEA chief it is noted that since the United States had not heeded its contractual commitment for provision of fuel for the TRR in 1970s, collaborating with the agency Iran had acquired the needed fuel in the year 1979 from Argentina.

It is said in the letter that the agency is required in accordance with the Article 3 of its Statute to “make provision for materials, services, equipment and facilities” due to the fact that TTR fuel lifetime is approaching its end.

It is also reiterated in the letter that the “Islamic Republic is still seeking to purchase fuel for Tehran reactor in cash.”

The letter adds that if the agency is incapable of performing its duties in accordance with Article 3 of its Statute, Iran is ready for exchange of low enriched uranium with the required fuel for TRR in one or more packages inside the territory of the Islamic Republic simultaneously.

Iran has in the letter also asked the IAEA secretary general to inform the entire potential providers of nuclear fuel of the matter and to let Iran know about the result.
