US proposal on Tehran reactor, illogical: spokesman

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Feb 10, IRNA -- Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mihman-Parast said on Wednesday that the US proposal that Iran shut down its Tehran research reactor and purchase medical isotopes instead is illogical.

Talking to IRNA, he said the proposal is not logical since a large group of patients are in need of such medicines.

This is not a good solution to shut down Tehran reactor or halt production of medicines, he said underlining the need for cooperation of the other side in order to increase the number of reactors and produce more medicines.

On the process of embargos against Iran, he urged the US and its allies to refrain from exerting political and economic pressures on Iran in order to deprive the Iranian nation of its most fundamental rights.

As to Iran’s peaceful nuclear program, he said the issue should be dealt with at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Sending Iran’s nuclear dossier to the United Nations Security Council was a wrong, illogical and illegal act from the very beginning, he said, adding that therefore, the UN’s anti-Iran resolutions had no legal basis.

Mihman-Parast reiterated that Iran’s 20-percent enrichment is within the framework of the country’s peaceful nuclear activities.

Meanwhile, the Foreign Ministry spokesman announced that Turkey's foreign minister is to pay an official visit to Tehran next week.

The visit will take place with an aim of further expanding Tehran-Ankara bilateral cooperation, he said, adding that issues of mutual interest as well as the latest regional and international developments will be discussed during the meetings of the Turkish minister and senior Iranian officials.
