IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Mashhad, Razavi Khorasan Prov., Jan 1, IRNA -- Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani on Friday demanded harshest possible punishment for the those involved in riots which took place on the Shiite mourning day of Ashura, Sunday December 27.

Speaking as a pre-sermon lecturer in today's Friday Prayers congregation in this northeastern Iranian city, the top legislator said people still urged the harshest punishment for those who are behind insults to the third Imam of Shiites as well as the Islamic values and sanctities.

He said some political figures fueled the flame of political disputes after the last presidential elections (June 12) in the country.

He said their whirlwind act prompted the country’s enemies to insult and undermine Islamic values including velayat-e faqih (the guardianship of the jurisprudent).

He urged such politicians to distance themselves from those who are after creating unrest and chaos in the society, warning them that they will be manipulated by enemies to promote their plots.

Larijani said the Iranian nation, especially during recent nationwide demonstrations, has repeatedly proven its loyalty and love for Velayat-e Faqih and will maintain its active presence on the scene in the future as well.
