Mottaki: Three US hikers will go on trial

Tehran, Dec 14, IRNA -- Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Monday that the three American nationals who illegally entered Iran’s territory would face trial.

Mottaki made the remarks in a joint press conference with his Azeri counterpart Elmar Mammadyarov.

This is a judiciary case and the three American hikers will be put on trial, Mottaki said in response to a question by a reporter whether Iran is to swap the three Americans with the Iranian inmates in the United States.

On Iran’s peaceful nuclear activities, he said, “I have already said that the unfounded allegations would not work and that it is not possible to frighten a unified nation through imposing economic sanctions.”

Addressing the big powers, he said, "You have tested the Iranian nation over 30 years; you only set fire on your own assets and defame yourselves."

In the meantime, Mottaki told the press conference that Iran is ready to take delivery of 20 percent enriched fuel rods in Kish Island in return for a stage-by-stage swap with Low Enriched Uranium.

He reaffirmed commitment to uranium swap to secure fuel supply for Tehran medical research reactor Iran demanded from the International Atomic Energy Agency.

He expressed Iranian nation's determination not to give up its legitimate rights consistent with nuclear energy.

On volume of trade between Iran and Azerbaijan, he said that trade currently stood at dlrs 600 million which must increase to one billion.

The Azeri foreign minister said for his part that Azerbaijan has planned to boost export of oil and gas as much as possible considering the Azeri national interests.

Mammadyarov thanked Iran for peace efforts in Karabakh and said that the Islamic Republic of Iran spares no efforts to help restore peace and stability in the entire the region.

Iran has always adopted a just stand in dealing with the issue of Karabakh and has called the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan to be fully respected, he said.
