Mottaki: Iran ready for uranium fuel swap

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Manama, Dec 12, IRNA -- Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said on Saturday that Iran is ready to swap 400 kilograms of enriched uranium with fuel for Tehran medical research reactor in Kish island.

Mottaki is on a visit to Manama to attend a conference on security cooperation in the region.

Speaking to reporters, Mottaki criticized the western’s demagoguery in dealing with Iran and said, “We have explicitly declared that Iran is ready to exchange some 400 kilograms of 3.5 percent enriched uranium in the Iranian Kish island and receive 20 percent fuel for Tehran medical research reactor. Isn't it an explicit response from Iran?.”

“Why do you imply that Iran is evading to give response? Isn't it demagoguery?” he questioned.

“We want to make sure that the swap is not a political game and that is why have declared our proposal. They should confirm that they will give us 20 percent uranium fuel in Kish in return for 400 kilograms of 3.5 enriched uranium to be delivered by Iran,” Mottaki said.

He said that Iran has fully cooperated with the Vienna-based International Atomic Energy Agency and answered to all questions to prove its sincerity.

“IAEA should have fulfilled all its commitments but much to our regret and due to unjustified interferences of the US which provided the IAEA with incorrect information, the IAEA failed to carry out its duties to this end,” Mottaki said.

The Islamic Republic of Iran is ready to continue its constructive cooperation with the G5+1 as before, underlined Mottaki.

On the current conference on security cooperation, he said priority should be given to people in the region and Iran welcomes the comments of others to this effect.

"Others have no right to dictate us and the countries in the region should help restore security through mutual cooperation."

Mottaki said, "Some consider themselves as the guardian of the world and believe that they should be present in all scenes to restore security, but, we believe that such presence would bring insecurity instead.
