Iran 'on everyone's mind' during UN Assembly meetings - Clinton

RIA Novosti

09:52 22/09/2009 WASHINGTON, September 22 (RIA Novosti) - The issue of Iran's nuclear program is "on everyone's mind" during this week's UN General Assembly meeting, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said in a televised interview.

During an interview with PBS on Monday, Clinton said the Iran Six (Britain, China, France, Russia, the U.S., and Germany) would meet with representatives from Iran on October 1 to discuss "one issue."

"We've made it very clear to Iran that they may have issues they wish to discuss with this group, but this group has one issue to discuss with them and that is, you know, their nuclear program," Clinton said.

The issue of Iran's nuclear agenda is not however on the formal agenda of the 64th UN General Assembly.

Clinton also said if Iran did not allow inspections of its nuclear program, it would face further isolation from the world community.

Iran has been under international pressure to halt uranium enrichment, used in both electricity generation and weapons production. Tehran has repeatedly rejected the demand, insisting it is pursuing a purely civilian program. Several Western powers have called for harsher sanctions against Tehran if it does not agree to halt uranium enrichment.
