Iranian Universities Question Students About Postelection Activities

September 04, 2009

TEHRAN – Independent student websites in Iran report that disciplinary committees in major universities are calling students suspected of participating in postelection protests to appear before them.

According to the sites, 50 students have appeared before a security committee at Tehran University while dozens more have been summoned before a disciplinary committee at the capital’s Science and Industrial University, Radio Farda reports.

Students have also been summoned before committees at universities in Mashhad, Tabriz and elsewhere. Three of the students summoned in Tabriz were banned from continuing their studies.

The disciplinary committees, whose function is usually limited to academic affairs, have become the latest tool in a crackdown on students before universities re-open over the next few weeks after summer holidays.

There has been no official announcement by the government of the committees’ screening activities.
