EU foreign ministers to discuss resolving Iranian nuclear impasse

Berlin, Apr 27, IRNA - European foreign ministers are set to meet in Luxembourg on Monday to discuss ways of finally settling the standoff over Iran's nuclear program.
Talks will reportedly dwell on the initiative by US President Barack Obama to rejoin western negotiations with Iran over its nuclear program.
Obama has overturned a decision by his predecessor George W. Bush who refused to sit down at the negotiating table unless Tehran suspended its uranium enrichment.
The European Union (EU) is now pondering to agree to a pre-negotiation phase with Iran by easing its strict pre-conditions.
Western news agencies reported over the weekend on a draft EU statement in which EU governments expressed support for Obama’s bid to reach out to Iran, placing the emphasis on diplomacy rather than sanctions to resolve the dispute over Iran’s nuclear program.
The statement, to be released by EU foreign ministers on Monday, urged a diplomatic settlement with Iran and made no explicit call for the tougher economic sanctions that Washington is contemplating.
“The EU warmly supports the new direction of US policy towards Iran. The EU calls upon Iran to seize this opportunity to engage seriously with the international community,” the statement added.
