Recast on Iran's status prior to talks with G5+1
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tehran, April 18, IRNA -- To persuade Iran to attend Group 5+1 talks, the US has to ignore sets of sanctions imposed against the country in the past, an analyst said on Saturday.
This is the only chance under the current situation that can bring Iran to the negotiating table; he said adding that there is no reason for Iran to help US resolve its problems in the region.
Talks between Iran and the Group 5+1 have turned into an issue in political gatherings, he contended.
Western countries who once urged Iran to suspend enrichment of uranium as a precondition for talks, have backed down from their demands and are ready to resume talks with Iran while the country continues to add to active centrifuges, he pointed out.
Officials of the western states tried to make the situation very complicated in order to fish in troubled waters and change their earlier stance on Iran, he said.
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini in the conference themed as 'Overcoming Nuclear Threats' said, "We are waiting to hear Iran's response to the proposal offered by US president on resumption of talks with Tehran and hope to hear Iran's positive response to Obama's request."
New York Times said in an article that western countries have backed down from their precondition of suspension of uranium enrichment and US officials reacted to this, the analyst said, noting that the US is in no hurry to show that it is backing down from its position.
Quoting a European diplomat, the New York Times said, "We believe that this will not be effective, but our experience tells us that the Iran never yields to such preconditions."
US deviationary steps should not be taken seriously since they are not in conformity with external realities, said the article.
Iran's potentialities have increased dramatically and the country's nuclear sites have spread to various parts of the country which makes the success of military actions against them very slim and the risk for a extensive military conflict in the region high. Therefore, the Zionist regime can by no means stand against Iran and the US is not in a favorable position to assist them.
The US after years of futile efforts is back to square one, he said.
IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei said that Bush always called for patience because Iran is not North Korea and will yield but this concept was wrong, he said.
ElBaradei said that the US policy during Bush administration was based on following principles: Seeking Iran's assistance in Afghanistan, Dealing with Iran for developments in Iraq, seeking European mediation in Iran's nuclear program, placing Iran on the 'axis of evil' and calling for regime change in Iran.
Iran had only a limited number of centrifuges in recent years but now the number of its active centrifuges is around 5,500 and the country has produced some thousands of kilograms of enriched uranium and have gained access to technological know-how to enrich uranium, ElBaradei said.
Iran has more cards at hand in regional developments -- more than what it had in 2001, he said adding that in Afghanistan, the US is in dire need of Iran's assistance, after the return of Taliban, NATO forces have problems in supplying equipment for their military.
Head of US Desk at the foreign secretary office, said Iran has no plan to resume talks with the US. Formal talks between officials of the two sides will not have any benefit for Iran but it is the US that will benefit from Iran's influence in the fields of religions and cultures for resolving problems in Afghanistan and Iraq.
It is the US that should place its cards on the table in seeking Iran's assistance to resolve the crisis in Afghanistan and Iraq, otherwise the situation will become worse, he pointed out.
US seeks to mastermind another scenario for Syria's nuclear program in other to divert the country from alliance with Iran but to no avail, he said.
To win Iran's consent to attend the talks, the US should remove the sanctions imposed on the country, otherwise there is no reason for Iran to help US resolve its problems in the region.
Through a new package of proposals, Iran is trying to define new yardsticks which underline that Iran's nuclear program has been resolved and the role of country in regional developments should be highlighted and there is no room for talks about previous nuclear activities.
