Mottaki: Elimination of nuclear weapons should be encouraged
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Tokyo, April 17, IRNA – Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said here Thursday that countries which have nuclear weapons should be encouraged to eliminate them.
In an interview with Friday edition of Yomiuri Newspaper, he added that Iran's stance vis-à-vis nuclear issue is clear.
Mottaki, who is in Tokyo to take part at the International Conference on Pakistan, said that elimination of nuclear weapons is a very good idea.
Stating that Japan can play a crucial role in this respect and it should place on its agenda software measures such as approving necessary resolutions at the UN, the minister said that the motto ‘nuclear energy for all and nuclear weapons for none’ should be materialized.
Lauding the country’s initiative in holding the event, he added that it took measures for reconstructing Afghanistan a decade ago.
Expressing concern on the conditions in the West Asia (Pakistan and Afghanistan), the top diplomat noted that policies to that effect have failed.
Japan can help regional countries by contributing to their projects, he said.
Describing extremism as a serious concern, he said that it knows no geographical limits, as it was yesterday in Afghanistan and today is in Pakistan.
Although the conference seeks to review the ways for extending economic assistances to Pakistan, it will also pay attention to the political and security roots of the issue.
