Iran-US-Interest Section
The United States will announce in the next month plans to establish a diplomatic presence in Iran for the first time in 30 years, London's Guardian newspaper said Thursday.
The administration of US President George W. Bush plans to establish an interests section staffed with diplomats similar to its outpost in Cuba, London's Guardian newspaper said.
The idea of establishing an outpost has been floating around Washington for a few weeks already.
Rice US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said that the US was determined to find ways to reach out to the Iranian people and wanted more Iranians to visit the US.
State Department official acknowledged last month that US officials have discussed the possibility of opening an interests section in Tehran.
The Guardian report came after the Bush administration announced Wednesday that its number three diplomat, Under Secretary of State William Burns, would attend international nuclear talks with Iran on Saturday.
Iran says its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes, aimed at generating power for a growing population whose fossil fuel would eventually run out.
