Jalili advises west to abandon confrontation

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Feb 22 -- Iran's top nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili said here on Friday that those choosing the path to confrontation have come to realize that the method is no longer effective. Jalili said in a press conference that it would be to the countries benefit to set aside the method of confrontation because Iranians are firm on their resolve.

Jalili said the latest UN nuclear watchdog report into Iran's atomic program proves the legitimacy of its position in the crisis and that its assurances have been correct.

"The report published today is new proof of the legitimacy of the position of the Islamic republic and the reality of the declarations by Iran," Jalili declared.

The UN atomic watchdog announced in a report on Friday that it had made good progress in its investigation into Iran's nuclear drive.

"In the last four months, in particular, we have made quite good progress in clarifying the outstanding issues that had to do with Iran's past nuclear activities," the IAEA chief Mohammed ElBaradei said Friday after the publication of his latest report on Iran.

ElBaradei urged Tehran to implement an accord allowing for detailed, unannounced inspections of nuclear facilities.

Only then would the IAEA be in a position to provide assurances that Iran's nuclear activities are peaceful, he added.

"Iran in the last few months has provided us with visits to many places, that enable us to have a clearer picture of Iran's current program. However, that is not, in my view, sufficient," he said.

In the report, ElBaradei said Iran had offered to implement the inspections protocol but only if the issue of its program nuclear was removed from consideration by the UN Security Council.
