Iran-IAEA talks, another step forward: Soltaniyeh

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Dec 13, IRNA
Iran's Ambassador to the International Atomic Energy Agency Ali-Asghar Soltaniyeh said Thursday that Tehran-IAEA technical talks on source of contamination were another step forward to settle outstanding nuclear issues.

"Technical talks between officials of Iran and the IAEA were held in a constructive and expert atmosphere and with effective cooperation of our country," Soltaniyeh said in an exclusive interview with IRNA.

He added that talks ended late Wednesday night after three days and the IAEA delegation left Tehran for Vienna.

"During the three-day talks, Iran provided necessary responses to the specialized questions about source of contamination," Iran's envoy stated.

In response to a question whether other sessions would be held over the issue, he added that the IAEA delegation would announce the outcomes of talks.

Technical talks between Iranian officials and members of a visiting delegation from the IAEA started Monday. The IAEA team was headed by Director for Safeguards Operations Herman Nackartes while Deputy Head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran for International Affairs Mohammad Saeedi, Soltaniyeh and a representative from Foreign Ministry Kazem Gharib-Abadi led the Iranian delegation.

The talks on the source of contamination at a Tehran technical university were held as the third subject examined in the continuing discussions.

The Islamic Republic of Iran has in recent months had several rounds of talks with the IAEA officials focusing on outstanding questions over its nuclear program.

The two sides have already held discussions about Iran's past experiments with plutonium and its use of P1 and P2 centrifuges. The source of contamination represents the latest chapter to be opened.

The agency sent written questions to Iran on the contamination issue on September 15 about the origin of the contamination in a technical university, the nature of the equipment used and the names of the equipment involved.

According to a nuclear official, Iran-IAEA talks are being held within the framework of an agreement signed on August 21 by officials from Iran and the IAEA.
