Iran's IAEA envoy: Negotiations to resolve remaining problems

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Iran's IAEA Envoy Ali Asghar Soltanieh said here Friday the latest achievement in resolving nuclear issues resulted from Iran's constructive interaction and dialogue, especially with ElBaradei and Solana.

He added, "The issue indicates that Iran would never be intimidated by threats and using such a language would have a negative effect on the situation."

Soltanieh said, "Iran will never abandon its inalienable rights upon International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) constitution and Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and will never quit enrichment technology." He continued, "Resolutions and sanctions imposed by the United Nations Security Council in this concern do not have legal basis.

Soltanieh said upon article 1230 of the agency constitution, if IAEA inspectors declare "lack of obligation" of a country in the uclear issue, the agency director general should send the dossier to the UN Security Council after approval of governing council of the agency.

Also, if the agency secretariat declares it is not able to inspect or rectify the issue in a country, such as the case with North Korea, and when a country gets out of NPT and do not allow inspection, then the aforementioned step can be taken.

The Iran's IAEA envoy said " None of these cases apply Iran and that is why we say the action does not have any legal and lawful basis.

Soltanieh continued, "The US government had predicted that Iran would expel the agency inspectors from Iran, discontinue its cooperation with the IAEA and leave NPT, but it was wrong and now the US government has been isolated more than ever."

In another part of his interview with IRNA here in Vienna, the envoy said, "Governing council will meet next week and maybe a number of countries want to behave like before, but the statement of Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) in supporting the latest report of IAEA's director general will be finalized soon.
