Vaeedi: Wild guesses not part of verification process

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, Nov 3, IRNA
Iran-Nuclear-Vaeedi
Deputy Secretary of Supreme National Security Council for International Security Affairs Javad Vaeedi said here Saturday that wild guesses cannot be part of verification process.

"Some countries make wild guesses about Iran's future peaceful nuclear activities; (it should be said that) wild guesses cannot be part of verification," said Vaeedi in a press conference here on Saturday.

He reiterated, "Wild guessing cannot be part of international commitments and essentially it is not part of verification; it can neither be judicial nor technical, rather it is something political (in nature)."

He added, "(The IAEA Chief Mohammed) ElBaradei has said that the IAEA has the duty to verify the past and present activities of a country. Some groups, claiming to verify Iran's future activities too, are in fact attempting to make wild guesses."

Asked about the impact of the Iran-IAEA cooperation on the UNSC measures, Vaeedi said proper implementation of Iran-IAEA agreement and positive report of ElBaradei in earlier meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors turned any anti-Iran attempt at the UN Security Council futile.

He said continuation of cooperation with the IAEA would keep ongoing positive atmosphere unchanged.

Asked about the SNSC Secretary Jalili's future itinerary, Vaeedi said visits to Europe or Asian and other countries, deemed to be facilitating talks, are expected.

On the timing and venue of future talks between Jalili and the EU Foreign Policy Chief Javier Solana, Vaeedi said the two sides agreed to talk before end of November and the exact date and venue of the talks would be specified through agreement.

He noted that six issues are on the Iran-IAEA agenda and closure of any one of them would depend on settling the previous one.

As for the P1 and P2 centrifuges, four rounds of talks were held, said Vaeedi, adding that two rounds of the talks were at the level of deputies of the SNSC secretary and the IAEA chief and two other rounds at the expert level.

He added that based on an Iran-IAEA deal, settlement of each issue, referred to in the agreement, would be possible in stages:

Firstly, the IAEA would present its questions and then Iran would try to resolve ambiguities and clarify obscurities upon receipt of the questions.

He said Tehran had on August 30 received questions about P1 and P2 centrifuges and final round of talks on the issue was held from October 29 to November 1. Almost 17 hours of talks were held in seven stages with IAEA Deputy Chief Olli Heinonen, he added.

The two sides talked in a constructive atmosphere under mutual goodwill and with the intention of settling problems and they were happy with the negotiations, he noted.

Concluding his remarks, Vaeedi said some countries, that are not happy with the Iran-IAEA cooperation, want to make early judgment about it and their propaganda is against the Iran-IAEA cooperation and Tehran's peaceful nuclear activities.
