IAEA, sole legal body to verify Iran N-activities - Embassy

Iran-IAEA Talks
The Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Iran in London Wednesday welcomed the recent remarks by Director-General of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Mohammed ElBaradei in the ongoing nuclear negotiations.

"ElBaradei's stance was not a personal view but based on the results of numerous IAEA inspections, as the sole legitimate international body to verify nuclear activities across the globe, showing Iran's sincerity on following peaceful purposes only," the mission said in a statement.

The statement comes after the IAEA chief emphasized on Sunday that there was no evidence that Iran was making a supposed nuclear bomb, as claimed by some western countries, and warned that their harsh approach was counterproductive.

The embassy also said that Iran and the UN agency were finalizing talks on P1 and P2 centrifuges based on a timetable agreed with the IAEA, adding that the process "requires a tranquil ambience as a matter of help."

Reports were that the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, the US, Russia, China, France and UK, plus Germany, were planning to hold their latest meeting on Iran possibly on Thursday or Friday in London.

But a Foreign Office spokesman told IRNA he could not confirm such reports.

Last week, the US broke the previous consensus by threatening more unilateral sanctions against Iran, but which was severely criticized by Russian President Vladimir Putin as being "like mad people wielding razor blades."

"The rational approaches of the competent international authorities suggest worldwide opposition against crisis-mongering policies and acceptance of dialogue and diplomacy to settle the differences over Iranian nuclear issue," the Iranian embassy said.

It also confirmed that the recent appointment of Saeed Jalili as Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council of Iran and the chief negotiator in the current talks with EU high representative Javier Solana meant no change whatsoever in Iran's accepted approach.

Jalili's position reflects "Iran's principal position for dialogue and reaching an agreement within the boundaries of Non- Proliferation Treaty (NPT)," the statement read.
