Second day of Iran-IAEA talks winds up

Iran-IAEA-Nuclear-Talks
Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) concluded the second day of talks here Tuesday.

Iran's Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Javad Vaeedi and visiting Deputy IAEA Chief for Safeguards Olli Heinonen co-chaired the second round of talks, held at the SNSC secretariat.

The talks were held within the framework of an agreement signed by officials from Iran and the IAEA in August and are likely to continue until Wednesday.

The first round of Vaeedi-Heinonen talks on P1 and P2 centrifuges was held in Tehran on October 9-11.

Deputy Head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization for International Affairs Mohammad Saeedi and Iran's permanent envoy to IAEA, Ali-Asghar Soltaniyeh, were members of the Iranian delegation to the talks.

Direct for Safeguards Operations Herman Nackartes, Hosoya Michio of the Division of Safeguards and IAEA Safeguards expert Malik Derrough made up the IAEA negotiation team.

"If any outstanding issue remains about the P1 and P2 centrifuges, we will sum up the case in the next few days before the IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei presents his report," Deputy Head of Iran's Atomic Energy Organization for International Affairs Mohammad Saeedi said.

He added that Iran and IAEA have so far had two rounds of detailed talks on P1 and P2 centrifuges during which explicit negotiations were held by the two sides.

"The file on plutonium has been closed and the IAEA presented its evaluation on the issue in September. No question has remained in this respect," Saeedi reiterated.

He expressed hope that the two sides will reach a clear conclusion on P1 and P2 centrifuges in November.

Meanwhile, Heinonen expressed hope that he would hold 'constructive' talks with Iranian officials in Tehran on P1 and P2 centrifuges.

Asked for his comments on the recent sanctions imposed unilaterally on Iran by the US, Heinonen said he would not answer the question as it was not within the scope of IAEA responsibilities.

The result of Vaeedi-Heinonen talks would be presented in a report by the agency's Director General Mohamed ElBaradei, to be released in November.
