Hosseini: Iranian armed forces give firm response to invaders

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini said on Sunday that the Iranian armed forces would give a crushing response to any invader who dare to violate the country's territorial integrity.

Speaking to reporters in his weekly press briefing on the activities of the World Bank he said that during his tenure (as Foreign Ministry spokesman), the bank did not initiate any banking cooperation with Iran.

Cooperation with the World Bank is based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) dubbed as Country Assistance Strategy (CAS) which is renewed every three years but it is about two years that the MoU has not been renewed between the two sides.

"We hope the CAS would be implemented in order help us implement infrastructure and humanitarian projects and not to be affected by the influence of some countries," he said.

The former World Bank president who was sacked for financial embezzlement was the cause of such delay, he said.

On the latest status of the Japanese university student who was abducted on the Iran-Pakistan border, he said that officials are doing their best to rescue him and he is believed to be in the border region and in good health.

Deputy IAEA Chief for Safeguards Olli Heinonen will arrive in Tehran on Sunday to begin fresh round of talks with Iranian officials on centrifuges on Monday, Hosseini said.

Deputy Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council Javad Vaeedi will head the Iranian team in the talks which are to come on the heels of earlier negotiations held from October 9-11 on P1 and P2.

The talks fall within framework of an agreement reached between Iran and the IAEA on August 21, 2006, he pointed out.

On increase of US sorties over Iranian borders in the southern region of the country, he said such measures run counter to international rules and regulations and there is no doubt that the Iranian armed forces would give a crushing response to those who wish to violate the country's territorial integrity, he said.

In the meantime, "We are quite confident that Iraqi officials never let their land be misused by foreigners against its neighbors," he concluded.
