Deputy foreign minister Saeed Jalili has been appointed as new secretary of the Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) to replace Ali Larijani, it was announced here Saturday.

President Ahmadinejad's senior advisor Mojtaba Samareh Hashemi, who announced the news to IRNA Saturday afternoon, said Jalili will start his work probably on Sunday after Larijani's farewell ceremony.

Government Spokesman Gholam-Hossein Elham in his weekly meeting with reporters on Saturday morning said that Ali Larijani had resigned from his post.

He said, "Larijani had resigned several times and President Ahmadinejad finally accepted his resignation."
Larijani was Iran's chief nuclear negotiator.

Elham added, "In spite of Larijani's resignation, his full schedule would be implemented by the new secretary of SNSC, including meeting with High Representative of European Union in foreign policy and security Javier Solana."

The meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday in Rome.

Saeed Jalili has already been deputy foreign minister in Europe and American Affairs.
