Mottaki: Iran to answer IAEA questions

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said here Friday that based on a decision made by Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Tehran is to provide response to several questions posed by the Agency.

Speaking to reporters upon return from New York, where he attended the 62nd UN General Assembly session, Mottaki said the first point was plutonium and answers to related questions had been given earlier.

Mottaki said the IAEA Chief Mohammad ElBaradei announced before start of the General Assembly session that the issue has been investigated and trhe case has been closed, said Mottaki.

He added that with the issue of plutonium ended, Iranian and IAEA experts put the issues of P1 and P2 on their agenda, which gave way to opening of a new round of cooperation with the Agency. "This did not please one or two certain parties in the G5+1, so they started building up pressure on other members to issue a resolution or sever the sanctions," he announced.

"In this stage, anybody enetering another phase would have committed a destructive act because Iran is cooperating with the IAEA while continuing its activities based on a strong logic," he said.

After several expert sessions, the G5+1 eventually decided in Washington last Friday to support the initiative of the Iran-IAEA cooperation, said Mottaki, adding that perhaps this has been the most proper gesture taken by the Group. "The approach was a logical and realistic reaction and was welcomed by others, including the OIC foreign ministers and NAM."
