Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad here Sunday reiterated that the Islamic Republic of Iran does not need nuclear bombs.
Addressing a group of Iranian expatriates living in the US, he said those pursuing nuclear bombs are reactionary because if the nuclear bombs were effective in the current world situation, presence of thousands of nuclear bombs would have prevented disintegration of the former Soviet Union.
He further stressed that nuclear bombs could not save those who invaded Iraq and were trapped in that country's quagmire.
Certain powers are concerned about Iran's turning into a model country for the whole world, Ahmadinejad said, stressing that therefore they oppose development and progress of the great Iranian nation.
Elsewhere in his speech, the Iranian president reiterated that the history has proved that the Iranian government has always been a peace-seeking government.
However, he noted, Tehran would never withdraw from its legitimate rights, including its national interests.
President Ahmadinejad, heading a high-ranking delegation, arrived in New York on Sunday to take part in the 62nd session of the United Nations General Assembly.
During his stay in New York, the president is scheduled to address the assembly and hold talks with the UN secretary general as well as presidents and senior officials of several countries on the sidelines of the UN meeting.
Delivering a speech at Colombia University, and holding discussions with a number of American Muslim, Jewish and Christian leaders will be among his other programs.
The president will also have interviews with a number of leading US media.
