UN backs Iran-IAEA agreement

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon here Thursday expressed his support for the recent agreement reached between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
In a meeting with Iran's permanent Representative to the United Nations Mohammad Khazaei, Ban said that he would spare no efforts to help the process of Iran-IAEA bilateral cooperation be fruitful.
Outlining Tehran's stance on peaceful use of nuclear energy, Khazaei said drawing of the modality (Action Plan) on resolving the outstanding issues was another indication of Iran's peaceful nuclear program as well as the country's will to remove possible ambiguities.
He added that the recent Iran-IAEA agreement was another measure adopted by Tehran based on goodwill and aimed at confidence building.
It is not acceptable that Western states oppose the IAEA reports whenever they are not in line with their interests, the ambassador said.
"Certain countries have targeted the IAEA's prestige through their irrational measures and stands," he said urging the UN officials to prevent such efforts aimed at damaging prestige of the UN and other international bodies.
Pointing to upcoming international meetings of the UN on Iraq and Afghanistan in New York, Khazaei expressed support for the Iraqi and Afghan nations and governments.
He voiced Iran's readiness to have active participation in the meetings.
The UN chief further praised Iran's vital role in Iraq and Afghanistan.
The UN is to hold international meetings on Iraq and Afghanistan in New York on September 22-23. Iran has been invited to take part in the meetings.
