Iran to reconsider IAEA cooperation in case of new UN resolution

Iran will reconsider its cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), if the United Nations Security Council issues a third resolution against the country, the Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said on Sunday.

Speaking to domestic and foreign reporters at his weekly press conference, Hosseini said Tehran would reconsider its cooperation with the IAEA and "study various options."

Commenting on the call of the IAEA's chief, Mohamed ElBaradei, for Iran to approve and then implement the Additional Protocol to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), Hosseini said the implementation of the Additional Protocol by Iran in the past was "a voluntary move." Stressing that implementation of the protocol needed Iran's Majlis approval, the spokesman argued, "We will make no more voluntary move, including implementation of the Additional Protocol, based on another approval by the Majlis as long as Iran's nuclear case is not returned to the IAEA."

As for the silence of Germany and China on ElBaradei's latest report on Iran, Hosseini said "The report had some positive points which prompted countries with more realistic attitude to reconsider their previous positions."

The spokesman expressed hope that other countries "will join those realistic states."

Commenting on the recent comments of the US President George Bush bout occurrence of a "nuclear holocaust" as well as the remarks made by the Italian foreign minister, Hosseini said, "We will reject any remarks which are far from logic and the existing realities." "There were various parts in President Bush's speech in which he repeated all his previous unfounded accusations against Iran," Hosseini said.

Referring to the term of "nuclear holocaust or nuclear massacre," the spokesman said, "That is what had happened by US in Hiroshima and (during the World War II).

"Iran has repeatedly announced that it had no intention to invade any country and that it is itself a victim of terrorist acts and the (Iraqi) imposed war which had taken place with the support from the US," the spokesman stressed.

He added, "Terrorism and extremism in the region is the product of the Americans (US officials)."
