Lawmaker: Iran has not made decision on Swiss nuclear offer yet

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, May 9, IRNA
Iran-Nuclear-Boroujerdi
Head of Majlis National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi said Wednesday that Iran has not made decision about Swiss offer on the nuclear program.

"Of course any proposal naturally undergoes some changes in the course of talks something which is acceptable. Therefore, since we have not entered the stage to negotiate the issue, I think the ground is prepared for such a stage," Boroujerdi told IRNA.

Boroujerdi made the remark on the sidelines of a ceremony marking the 10th anniversary of monitoring and verifying compliance with the Chemical Weapons Prohibition Convention.

As for the the second round of talks between Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani and the EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana in Ankara and Tehran's possible rejection of Swiss offer, Boroujerdi said, "The exact timing of the second round of the talks had not been set in Ankara based on which we can say there was no delay. Agreement has been reached on outlines of the talks and the two sides would come to terms on the specific timing and venue of the negotiations.

As for arrest of Iranian sailors in the UAE waters and its impact on the Tehran-Dubai ties on the eve of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's visit to the kingdom, Boroujerdi said, "We share territorial waters with the UAE and in the past too many UAE residents were arrested by our border guards. Usually, that regularly occurs for the countries, which share common sea borders. Since our and the neighboring states' vessels are present on borders and since there are occasional stormy weather, border trespass usually happens. Such incidents occurred in the past years and were settled. So, that's not something unprecedented."

He hoped the issue would soon be settled and the detained sailors would be released soon.

On Iran's stance at the preliminary session to refocus on provisions of NPT, Boroujerdi said Iran is an NPT signatory and naturally it can call for observation of its rights, while abiding by its commitments.

Some countries, including the US, tried to make changes in some of the provisions of the treaty, including clauses six and four, but they failed due to opposition of the majority.
