Spokesman: Iran's nuclear program is peaceful

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Tehran, May 9, IRNA

Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad-Ali Hosseini said Wednesday that Iran's nuclear program is completely peaceful and there is no reason for concern.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran's activities in peaceful use of nuclear energy has always been confirmed by the International Atomic Energy Agency and the international community and the Agency's reports testify that there is no room for concern over Iran's nuclear activities," said Hosseini.

He made the remark in reaction to the joint statement of European Union and the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council regarding Iran's peaceful nuclear activities.

Hosseini said investigation of Iran's nuclear issue at the UN Security Council is in open contradiction with the will and consent of the international community, including the Non-Aligned Movement and the Organization of the Islamic Conference, as well as with the demand of the European Union for settlement of the case through dialogue and negotiation, while safe-guarding absolute rights of countries for peaceful use of nuclear energy based on the international treaties and conventions, including NPT.

He added that investigation of Iran's nuclear issue does not fall within competency of the UN Security council and its resolutions would not afford any help to solve it.

While emphasizing the need for return of Iran's nuclear issue to the IAEA from the UNSC, Hosseini said Iran is prepared to continue talks in the framework of the IAEA regulations.

He recalled close and amicable ties and cooperation among Iran's Persian Gulf neighbors based on mutual respect and regretted the statement's dealing with the issue of three Iranian islands, underlining the need for respect to countries' sovereignty right.

He emphasized Iran's sovereignty over the three islands of the Greater and Lesser Tunbs and Abu Moussa and said Iran is willing to iron out any misunderstanding with the UAE within a fraternal and cordial framework on bilateral basis.
