Iran to continue nuclear program despite pressure - president

RIA Novosti

25/02/2007 15:53 TEHRAN, February 25 (RIA Novosti) - Iran will continue its civilian nuclear program despite the international community's demands that it halt uranium enrichment, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said Sunday.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) reported Friday that Iran had ignored a UN Security Council demand to halt its uranium enrichment program and was seeking to expand the program.

"Iran has obtained technology to produce nuclear fuel and Iran's move is like a train without brakes and a rear gear," Ahmadinejad said.

The Islamic Republic has been under international pressure since it resumed uranium enrichment in January 2006, which some Western countries suspect is part of a covert nuclear weapons program. Tehran has always denied the claims.

In December, the UN Security Council imposed limited sanctions on Iran over its reluctance to suspend uranium enrichment and set a deadline that expired Wednesday. The Islamic Republic that insists its nuclear program is peaceful ignored the deadline and could now face stringent sanctions and isolation.
