Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel said here Tuesday that defense of the right to pursue peaceful nuclear energy has become a symbol of the country's aspirations for independence.

Haddad-Adel, addressing an open session of Majlis, praised the massive participation of the Iranian nation in the Feb 11 (Bahman 22) rallies marking the 28th anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution in Iran.

"The Iranian nation insisted on its nuclear right during the Bahman 22 rallies.

"In fact, the nation echoed the joint stance of Majlis and government on the country's right to peaceful use of nuclear energy in the February 11 rallies," he said.

He said the Iranian people support the Islamic Revolution.

"Their overwhelming support and loyalty to the ideals of the Father of the Islamic Revolution, the late Imam Khomeini, were once again manifested in this year's rallies marking the victory of the Islamic Revolution," he added.

"The Iranian people, in the path to independence, have chosen to defend freedom and the Islamic Revolution. Their massive turn-out in the Bahman 22 rallies showed their commitment to preserving (the country's) independence," Haddad-Adel said.

Recalling the bombing of the shrines of Shi'ite Imams Ali al-Naqi (AS) and Hassan al-Askariya (AS) exactly a year ago today in Samarra, the speaker said "the Zionists and US will achieve nothing by causing discord among Shi'ites and Sunnis.

"Shi'ites and Sunnis have always had a peaceful coexistence since the outset of Islam."
