Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council Ali Larijani Sunday stressed that weapons of mass destruction (WMDs) have no place in his country's national security doctrine.

Addressing the Munich security confab, Larijani said: "Repeatedly and frankly we have announced that in Iran's national security doctrine there is no room for atomic and chemical weapons as we consider them against Islamic laws. Iran's Supreme Leader (Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei) in this connection had issued a decree that mass destruction weapons are prohibited by the Muslim religion." In addition, he said that Iran will not contemplate acquiring WMDS as it will trigger an atomic arm race in the region which will in turn endanger the peace and stability of the region and the world.

"Therefore we support the idea of a Middle East free from weapons of mass destruction," he said.

Larijani reiterated that all of Iran's nuclear activities are transparent and within the framework of the NPT and under the supervision of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

He stressed the need for a negotiated settlement of the dispute over Iran's nuclear program.

"We believe in a solution through negotiation and dialogue. If the other side is similarly determined I am sure within a few months all issues will be finalized and the way will be paved for long-term cooperation both in regional affairs and energy," Larijani said.

"But irrational pre-conditions such as suspension of uranium enrichment set for resumption of negotiation are practically standing as obstacles in the way of settlement of this issue," he said.

He added that it has been almost eight months that pre-conditions to negotiation set by the West have prevented settlement of the nuclear issue.

Iran has repeatedly said it is ready to find an acceptable solution to the ongoing nuclear row, Larijani added.
