Russian Ivanov: We are trying to attenuate nuclear crisis

, Jan 29 -- Visiting Secretary of Russian Security Council Igor Ivanov said his visit to Tehran is aimed at attenuating the current crisis of Iranian nuclear issue and finding a political solution.

Speaking to reporters in a joint press conference with his Iranian counterpart Ali Larijani, Ivanov said the Iranian nuclear issue has no military solution and all sides should do their best to find a way out of the current situation.

He said Russia respects Iran's right to peaceful use of nuclear energy and supports a political solution, noting that all remaining issues between Iran and UN nuclear energy agency should be settled.

Ivanov said a recent proposal put forth by al-Baradei, which he called a time-out, could be taken into consideration including suspension of both enrichment process and enactment of resolution 1737.

The Russian official said that Iranian nuclear power station in Bushehr would become operational on schedule.

Ivanov said Russian President's messages to Iran's Supreme Leader and president is indicative of his country's willingness to expand relations with its neighboring and long-standing partner in various fields including economy and commerce.

The Russian official said he was very pleased to witness the willingness of Iran's Supreme Leader, president and other high ranking officials to expand relations with his country.

Ivanov told reporters in the press conference that he held talks with Iranian officials about the current critical situation of the region including Iraq, Lebanon and Afghanistan.
