The Islamic Revolution's Guard Corps (IRGC) began missile wargames in the Garmsar region in eastern Semnan province Sunday.
Colonel Reza Hashemian told IRNA that the military exercises will be conducted in various stages for a period of five days.
The first stage involving recognition, settlement and occupation of positions began yesterday and will last until this afternoon, he added.
Other stages of the wargames including missile installation and firing will begin later this evening, Colonel Hashemian said.
An artillery commander, describing the aim of the exercises, said "we will assess the operational capabilities of Zelzal and Fajr-5 missiles."
According to military sources, the Fajr-5 missile has a range of around 75km (46 miles) while the Zelzal has a range of between 100 to 400km.
In November 2006 Iran successfully test-fired its Shahab-3 ballistic missile, which has a range of up to 2,000km (1,200 miles).
