Solana says EU door open for negotiations with Iran

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency

Brussels, Jan 17, IRNA
European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana said Wednesday that the door for negotiations with Iran was never closed and that the EU position is on the table for talks on the nuclear issue.

"I was never in favour of using force against Iran or any other country. I believe diplomacy and negotiations are the line EU countries should maintain," Solana told reporters in Brussels this afternoon..

"I am saying this with a friendly heart. I want to repeat once again we have a way and it is the negotiations," said Solana speaking in French..

"Unfortunately it has not been successful but I am still having hope and we must continue. The way that we must follow is the way of the UN and the talks."

"I hope that the Iranians will respond positively to the demands of the international community," said the EU foreign policy chief.

The EU position is on the table for negotiations to find a solution in a gentle way, he said.

"The door will never be closed for negotiations," he stressed.

Asked to comment on France's plans to send a special envoy to Iran, Solana said he thinks there is always possibility to keep the contact open with Iran .

"But I don't think it should be done without consultation with countries involved," he said.

Solana said he will be visiting Paris on 24 January when he is expected to discuss the issue with French President Jacques Chirac.

Chirac is to host an international conference on Lebanon on January 25 in Paris.
