Deputy Foreign Minister for Parliamentary and Consular Affairs Hamid-Reza Asefi said here Monday the Resolution 1737 of the UN Security Council would have no serious impact on Iran's capabilities.

Asefi made the remark while speaking to IRNA in an exclusive interview in reaction to a resolution passed by the Security Council on Saturday night against Iran's peaceful nuclear activities.

"The resolution says no nuclear facilities will be granted to Iran. An unannounced sanction has been imposed on Iran since the outset of the Islamic Revolution (in 1979) but we are currently powerful despite different sanctions," he said.

He added that the resolution set "a bad background" for the Security Council, saying it led to weakening of the council.

He assessed the resolution as "illegal" and said, "Adoption of the resolution by the Security Council is regarded as a catastrophe for the United Nations and runs counter to the council's responsibilities."

Asefi noted that confidence-building is a two-way road, stressing, "The Islamic Republic of Iran has taken its measures to build confidence but will revise its policies in this regard." He said, "A bill on Iran's cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) is on Majlis agenda which once approved will make revision in Iran's cooperation with the agency." The deputy foreign minister stated that the resolution might have psychological impacts for few days, adding, "It will have no practical effects.

"Iran will not accept the resolution. We rebuke those who have passed the resolution."
