He strongly denounced taking advantage of the late Imam Khomeini's reputation, or that of the Supreme Leader, by the candidates of any of those elections in their campaigns, as well as extravagance in those campaigns.
"The people would ask where did all the money those candidate spent in their campaign come from, which would naturally be negative campaign for those candidates and a challenge for the system," added Khatami.
The Friday preacher of Tehran referred to the "Islamic nature of the system", "Leadership of the supreme source of jurisprudence (Velayat-e-Faqih)", "System's democratic nature and reliance on people's votes (republicanism)", and "Iran's official religion and school of thought (Shi'a)" as the four columns of the Iranian Constitution.
He added, "Thus, the leadership of the system is one of its main pillars, and if a crisis would emerge regarding the leadership of the system, it is merely the Leadership Council that can solve that problem."

The provisional Friday prayers leader said, "In upcoming days the US Republicans would most likely try to blame the others for the problems that have emerged due to their own mistakes."
Noting that during the course of occupation of Iraq 600,000 Iraqi citizens have got killed, he said, "There has been no other factor that the presence of the occupier forces for the emergence of that catastrophe."
He added, "That is the seed you have planted; so be brave enough to harvest it yourselves, not to blame the others for the problems you have so boldly created."
The Tehran Friday preacher emphasized, "Blaming the others for your own mistakes would solve none of your problems, since the other solution is the immediate and unconditional evacuation of the occupation forces from Iraq."
Khatami said, "They are after convincing the Islamic World that the United States and the Zionist regime are not the Muslims' main enemies."
He said, "In Palestine, Iraq, and Lebanon, they are after intriguing the people to confront the people, rather than confronting the Americans and the Zionists, and therefore, under such conditions, the Islamic solidarity is our gravest urgent need."
The interim Friday preacher of Tehran added, "The Americans act as hypocrites in Iraq, and while pretending to be the supporters of the elected Iraqi government, they secretly pursue plans to weaken (Prime Minister Maleki's) popular government."
Khatami said, "They chant apparently anti-terrorist slogans, but sit at negotiation tables with the terrorists, ordering them to kill as many Iranians and as many Shi'as as they could."
Khatami added, "They once introduced Iran as a threat against its neighbors after the victory of the Islamic Revolution, and US Secretary of State's regional visit was aimed at propagating the same lies against Iran."
He said, "Iran has posed absolutely no threat against any country throughout the past twenty seven years, since we are not an aggressor power."
