EU Backs Limited Sanctions on Iran
17 October 2006
The European Union says it backs limited sanctions against Iran after failed attempts to negotiate with Tehran about its nuclear program.
EU foreign ministers said Tuesday there is no choice but to support consultations at the United Nations Security Council about possible sanctions.
In a statement, EU ministers also expressed deep concern about Iran's refusal to suspend uranium enrichment before further negotiations.
Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says his country will not stop enrichment activities as a condition for new talks.
Reuters news agency quoted France's U.N. ambassador as saying a draft proposal on sanctions could be presented this week.
Russia and China have resisted recent calls at the Security Council to impose sanctions on Iran.
Meanwhile, Israel's President Ehud Olmert traveled to Moscow to discuss the Iranian nuclear program. He said he is convinced that Russia believes Iran should not be allowed to acquire nuclear weapons.
Iran's government has repeatedly denied claims that it is seeking nuclear weapons.
