Iran-Nuclear-Ivanov
The head of Russia's security council, Igor Ivanov, on Tuesday backed a diplomatic solution to the problem with Iran's peaceful nuclear program after talks with Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani.
Ivanov said talks between Larijani and EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana to find a solution to the crisis had the full backing of Moscow.
"We welcome the discussions between Mr. Solana and Mr. Larijani and we think that this can ... prepare the ground for a political and diplomatic solution," Ivanov said after the talks in Tehran.
"Russia believes that all the aspects of the Iranian nuclear program should be settled around the negotiating table and through dialogue."
Larijani, for his part, said both Russia and Iran agreed that 'solving the situation through negotiation is possible. We hope that Russia can help in this direction'.
Russia, which opposes sanctions against Iran, wants to continue work on building Iran's first nuclear power station at Bushehr, in southern Iran.
