Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said here Wednesday resumption of consultations will help forge better understanding between Iran and the EU.

Mottaki, during a meeting with his Finnish counterpart Erkki Tuomioja on the sidelines of the 61st annual session of the United Nations General Assembly, told him Tehran was willing to hold rotating consultations with the EU.

Mottaki took the occasion to brief Tuomioja, whose country holds the rotating presidency of the EU, on developments in the Iran nuclear issue and said continuation of negotiations was crucial in forging a better understanding of all issues and removing misunderstandings.

Shifting to the subject of the Israeli offensive in Lebanon, Mottaki criticized the UN Security Council's delay in approving Resolution 1701, which ended the war on Aug 14, saying it would have ended sooner resulting in less casualties and material damage had the resolution been passed earlier.

Tuomioja, for his part, briefed Mottaki on his meetings as EU chair with respect to Iraq, Afghanistan and Lebanon, expressing agreement with Mottaki that the Security Council unjustifiably delayed approval of the resolution.

He highlighted EU member states' contribution to enforcing the ceasefire through their contingents in UNIFIL.

He also praised Iran's support for the resolution.
