Foreign Ministry spokesman Mohammad Ali Hosseini on Monday strongly criticized the US administration for withholding visa for some members of Iranian delegation led by President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad to take part in annual meeting of the United Nations General Assembly.
IRNA reporter in New York said that the reporters accompanying the president to cover debates of the General Assembly have not yet received visa too.
Hosseini said that enforcing restrictions on the UN member states is a practical step from the United States to undermine the world body.
"With such refusal, the United States showed that it does not respect prestige of the United Nations and its member states as well." Hosseini also protested to Washington against withholding visa to Iranian Interior Minister Mostafa Pour-Mohammadi who had planned to take part in conference of interior ministers of the member states last week.
"It is surprising that the US, the so-called advocate of freedom of the press and freedom of expression also refused to grant visa for Iranian reporters assigned to cover debates of the United Nations," Hosseini said.
According to the International Territory Status of the United Nations Headquarters, the United States has undertaken to grant visa for the UN member states to take part in the conferences of the body.
