US Wants Sanction Resolution on Iran

08 September 2006

The United States says it expects the U.N. Security Council to begin work on a resolution to sanction Iran over its nuclear program as early as next week.

U.S. Under-Secretary of State Nicholas Burns told reporters in Berlin Friday diplomats from six world powers will have more discussions on the issue Monday. After that, Burns says it should be moved to the Security Council to draft a resolution.

Burns discussed the Iran nuclear issue in Berlin Thursday with diplomats from Britain, France, Russia and China - the other permanent U.N. Security Council members - plus Germany.

The United States said the talks were productive. But media reports suggest not all diplomats agreed on how to proceed with Iran.

French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy signaled flexibility on the suspension of Iran's uranium enrichment program. Russia and China have long been reluctant to punish Tehran.

The United States has said it expects U.N. Security Council members to honor a decision to sanction Iran for disregarding the August 31 deadline to suspend its uranium enrichment program.

Iran says it is ready for negotiations but will not halt uranium enrichment, which it says is only for peaceful uses.

European Union foreign policy chief Javier Solana says he will meet Iran's chief nuclear negotiator, Ali Larijani, Saturday to discuss the nuclear issue.
